Abstract: Pinching in mathematics means the block diagonalization of operators with a set of orthogonal projections on a Hilbert space. We show how simple pinching inequalities can be used to prove many important properties of a new family of quantum Renyi divergences, and eventually express them as error exponents in binary state discrimination.
